Fishing during your hunt
Fishing can be excellent between hunts. Carry the correct Ontario fishing licence and check the current zone rules, limits and any lake-specific restrictions before you cast.
The light walleye setup below is a practical starting point. Ask us before shopping for a dedicated pike setup.
Wesley’s starting setup
Bring a sensitive two-piece spinning rod, a 2500-size reel and clear 8-pound monofilament. A two-piece rod travels more easily on the floatplane.
Pack ¼-, ⅜- and ½-ounce jig heads. Bright pink/yellow, chartreuse/orange and chartreuse/lime are favourites. Bring 3-inch minnow-style plastics in smelt or pearl white and curly-tail grubs in white or chartreuse/orange.
Lower the jig to the bottom, lift it a few inches and let it fall again. Change the pause and retrieve until you find what works. Cast and drag the jig along a changing bottom contour to cover different depths. Bring a landing net, pliers and a few leaders or pike-capable lures. Land fish with the net rather than lifting them by the rod tip.
Remove exposed hooks from rods before aircraft loading. Pack a life jacket for every angler, rain gear and waterproof footwear. Follow current fishing rules and keep fish remains away from sleeping areas.
