Confirm phone roaming or an eSIM, download offline information and learn the satellite options available to the group.

Choose the border crossing and route, identify required fuel stops and reserve the night before fly-out.

Gather travel, vehicle and firearm documents and review what your group must declare before crossing.

Decide how the group will transport meat home and allow time for a possible overnight stay in Pickle Lake.

PLAN YOUR
COMMUNICATION.

Do not assume a U.S. plan or travel eSIM will work throughout Northwestern Ontario. Prepare for long stretches without cellular coverage.

Confirm the network

Ask whether your exact phone and plan can roam on the Tbaytel/Rogers network near Pickle Lake. Confirm the Canadian partner before buying an eSIM.

Save information offline

Download offline maps and save hotel, Airways, border and Wesley's contact information where every driver can reach it without service.

Set up satellite backup

Hunters with iPhone 14 or later can set up individual satellite texts for harvest updates, filled tags, boat problems and messages home. Practise with Apple’s Satellite Connection Demo before leaving; a live test requires a place with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Bring charging power and keep the supplied Garmin inReach available for camp coordination.

Minnesota route

International Falls to Dryden

Plan to begin Highway 502 with enough fuel for the full Fort Frances-to-Dryden stretch.

Final northern leg

Sioux Lookout to Pickle Lake

Make Sioux Lookout the required fill-up before the final drive north. Do not count on fuel between Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake.

Night before

Reserve Pickle Lake

Book the Pickle Lake Hotel for the night before fly-out. Confirm current rates and cancellation terms directly.

Before buying a travel eSIM

Ask the provider to confirm coverage at Pickle Lake, not simply “Canada.” Check the exact plan’s Canadian partner networks, whether regional roaming is included, and whether it includes normal phone calls and SMS or data only. A data-only plan does not by itself supply a Canadian phone number.

As checked September 21, 2026, Airalo’s Canada page displays Bell as its primary network. Do not assume that buying this plan provides Rogers or Tbaytel access. Likewise, confirm your specific T-Mobile plan and phone with T-Mobile before relying on roaming. We have not verified a universal travel plan that works for every guest in Pickle Lake.

Download maps and contact details before leaving service. Arrange hotel Wi-Fi as a backup, and test your compatible phone’s satellite features before the trip. Satellite features depend on the phone, software, region and service; not every iPhone supports them.

Pickle Lake Hotel: booking checklist

Wesley’s existing travel guide lists the hotel at 1 Koval Street, Pickle Lake, with front desk/reservations at 807-928-2882. Call to confirm current contact details, room availability and rates. Our older guide’s room price and restaurant hours should not be treated as current quotes.

  • Reserve the night before fly-out and tell the hotel if you expect a late arrival.
  • Confirm check-in instructions, parking, Wi-Fi and current restaurant hours.
  • If reserving a backup room for your return, ask for the cancellation deadline and any charge in writing.
  • Plan for weather delays of more than one day; a same-day flight home should not be your only option.

PREPARE FOR
THE BORDER.

Each traveller is responsible for current entry, firearm, food, alcohol and game-export rules.

Travel documents

Carry the appropriate entry document, driver's licence, vehicle registration and insurance. Bring consent documentation when applicable for a minor travelling without both parents.

Firearms

Non-residents generally complete the RCMP declaration before arrival but sign it only in front of the border officer.

Check current rules for food, alcohol and other goods your group will bring into Canada. Be ready to declare them at the border.

PLAN THE
TRIP HOME.

Plan for when your return flight lands back in Pickle Lake. Decide before departure whether the group will begin driving or stay overnight, and how harvested meat will remain cold.

Morning or afternoon return flight

Most groups load up and begin driving. Know who will drive first, where to stop for fuel and how you will keep harvested meat cool in transit.

Early evening return flight

Weather, earlier flights or mechanical delays can push your pickup toward the end of the day. Decide in advance whether your group will drive or stay overnight in Pickle Lake. If a backup hotel reservation is part of the plan, confirm its cancellation deadline.

Meat and permits

Choose truck bed, trailer or chest-freezer transport and organize required export paperwork before the hunt.
