Plan route and fuel
Choose the border crossing and route, identify required fuel stops and reserve the night before fly-out.
Prepare border documents
U.S. hunters: check passports or other accepted land-border documents early. Gather vehicle and firearm paperwork and review what the group must declare.
Plan the return
Decide how the group will transport meat home and allow time for a possible overnight stay in Pickle Lake.

EXPECT GAPS
IN CELL COVERAGE.
Whatever mobile plan you have, prepare for hours without service on parts of the drive from Fort Frances toward Dryden and from Sioux Lookout to Pickle Lake. Many carriers also do not roam in Pickle Lake. Download maps and set up a backup before departure.
Use iPhone satellite texts
For most groups, a compatible iPhone’s Messages via satellite is the simplest way to send a short text where cell and Wi-Fi coverage disappear, including at camp. Set it up and try Apple’s Satellite Connection Demo at home. It needs a clear view of the sky; SMS support depends on your carrier. Download the route and maps. Save hotel, Airways and Wesley’s contact details to every driver’s phone before the coverage gaps. Bring charging power and agree how your group will check in when separated.
Calls and internet
At the hotel, use Wi-Fi Calling if your carrier supports it and you have enabled it. If your group wants phone calling and internet in the bush, bring a Starlink Mini with an active plan and a suitable power setup. Satellite texting is enough for many guests who only need messages.

International Falls to Dryden
Plan to begin Highway 502 with enough fuel for the full Fort Frances-to-Dryden stretch.
Sioux Lookout to Pickle Lake
Make Sioux Lookout the required fill-up before the final drive north. Do not count on fuel between Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake.
Reserve Pickle Lake
Book the Pickle Lake Hotel for the night before fly-out. Confirm current rates and cancellation terms directly.

Check whether your exact phone and plan can use the network at Pickle Lake. A plan advertised for Canada may still have no service there, and no plan eliminates every gap along the drive. Confirm the partner network with the carrier before purchasing; a data-only eSIM may not provide regular calls or SMS. Keep offline maps and satellite texting ready either way.
Pickle Lake Hotel: booking checklist
Wesley’s existing travel guide lists the hotel at 1 Koval Street, Pickle Lake, with front desk/reservations at 807-928-2882. Call to confirm current contact details, room availability and rates. Our older guide’s room price and restaurant hours should not be treated as current quotes.
- Reserve the night before fly-out and tell the hotel if you expect a late arrival.
- Confirm check-in instructions, parking, Wi-Fi and current restaurant hours.
- If reserving a backup room for your return, ask for the cancellation deadline and any charge in writing.
- Plan for weather delays of more than one day; a same-day flight home should not be your only option.

Each traveller is responsible for current entry, firearm, food, alcohol and game-export rules.
Travel documents
U.S. citizens driving across the border: We recommend that every hunter bring a valid U.S. passport book or passport card. Canada also lists the NEXUS card and U.S. enhanced driver’s licence for land entry. An ordinary driver’s licence or REAL ID alone does not establish U.S. citizenship and is not enough. CBSA lists other ways to establish identity and citizenship, including a birth certificate with separate photo ID, but do not assume that combination meets the requirements for your return to the United States. If you plan to use anything other than a passport book, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver’s licence, confirm your documents directly with both CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection before travelling. Every driver should also carry a valid licence, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Bring consent documentation when applicable for a minor travelling without both parents.
