Flying In On Floats - What to Expect

1. When you arrive at Pickle Lake Airways in Pickle Lake, Ontario you will check in with the office to let them know you have arrived and also to check on the current schedule of flights. They might give you an exact time or they might give you a time to check back in because of weather.

A note regarding flight schedules/delays:

Weather can screw up everything when flying on small float planes but it's the only way in and out of the remote bush so you have to learn to go with the flow. It is the nature of the beast. Also just because the weather is currently clear doesn’t mean your flight will fly on schedule. Prior weather can backlog flights and lead to delays as they catch up on getting others in and out of the bush who have been waiting. They go in order of the scheduled flights. Thanks for your patience and understanding. It’s one of those things that can be challenging for people to understand who are coming from a world of Boeing 737’s flying in anything. In the fall, the morning air tempature is often considerable lower than the water tempature and often creates fog issues that leads to delays. It's just good to be mindful of the possibility of a delay.

2. When it’s your time to go you will start by weighting in your belongings. There is a scale just off the dock at Pickle Lake Airways and this is where you will stage your belongings for the flight. They will weight it prior to packing the plane.

If you have questions about how much weight you have allocated for your flight please contact us at Wesley’s Outposts and we will let you know.

3. Once your in the air sit back and relax. It’s a beautiful 45 minute flight to the outpost.

We recognize some of you might not be used to flying on smaller aircrafts. Here are some tips: If your nervous be mindful not to over dress. It’s better to be cold than hot. Also don’t eat right before the flight, keep a bottle of water near by and take occasional sips. You might even try putting some headphones on and close your eyes to relax even more.

4. When you land, stay out of the pilots way as he docks the plane. There might be a previous fishing or hunting party leaving on the flight that you came in on. In this case make sure you don’t get your stuff mixed up on the dock. Also check with the departing party about the location of the satellite phone as a final double check to ensure it doesn’t accidently fly back to Pickle Lake. If everyone helps out the turn over can happen nice and smoothly.

5. Finally the pilot might ask you to hold a rope or the planes in place while he fires up the engines to depart.
